Spring planting isn’t about the calendar- it’s about soil temperature.

Many new growers rush seeds into the ground too early. Cold soil slows germination and increases rot risk.

Here’s a quick guide:

Peas & spinach: 40–50°F soil
Carrots & lettuce: 45–55°F
Corn & beans: 60°F+
Use a simple soil thermometer and check at 2 inches deep in the morning.

Also know your last frost date, but don’t treat it as absolute. Microclimates matter — raised beds warm faster, shaded areas stay cooler.

Patience early in the season often leads to stronger growth later.
